Job Description

The Save the Children Alliance has more than 20 years of operational presence in Kenya addressing education, child protection, nutrition, HIV/AIDS, and water and sanitation. It has long-standing, strong partnerships and working relationships with various district authorities in the country. In addition, Save the children has been supporting both CBOs and national NGOs.

Following disputed results of the presidential elections held on December 27th and the subsequent hurried inauguration of President Kibaki on December 30th, violence erupted across many parts of Kenya. Since the beginning of the crisis there have been over 1000 reported deaths and the displacement of over 300,000 people, half (150,000) of those displaced are children. Current estimates of the still displaced population are 116,000. Children have been exposed to a range of protection issues including abuse and violence. A clear gap exists in addressing children’s relief from emotional distress, protection against abuse and violence, and for ensuring that children’s education continues.

While the GoK is keen to present the camps as purely transitional areas, people remain reluctant to leave camps for their homes due to safety concerns. Save the Children’s response will address the protection and education needs of children who are displaced, separated from families or orphaned as a result of the current emergency both in the IDP sites and the wider community.
