Human Rights Watch (“HRW”) is seeking highly-qualified applicants for the position of Office Associate with the Europe & Central Asia (“ECA”) division's Tashkent Office.

Description: This is a one-year, full-time opportunity in our Tashkent field office for candidates with a strong interest in a future career in international human rights. The position may be extended for another year depending on funding. The Office Associate will provide HRW's Tashkent-based representative with logistical, administrative, clerical and substantive assistance while enjoying close supervision by HRW staff and gaining valuable exposure to the work of this international human rights organization.

The Associate's responsibilities will include:

* maintaining files, contact lists and a database of political prisoners
* maintaining communication among HRW's Tashkent and international offices
* drafting correspondence, responding to requests for information and preparing for and taking minutes at meetings
* occasional translating
* assisting with travel arrangements and follow-up
* assisting HRW's Tashkent representative with research and monitoring activities including interacting with local and international organizations, local officials and visiting foreign delegations
* helping with the collection of evidence of human rights abuses, including taking complaints
* attending and taking notes at trials
* other taskings as may be assigned
Qualifications: Candidates must be available as of mid-May 2008. An undergraduate degree is required, preferably in International Relations, Political Science or a related field. Russian and/or Uzbek language skills and very strong computer skills are essential. Relevant regional study and/or experience, as well as previous office experience, is desirable. Candidates must be self motivated, extremely well-organized, collegial, culturally sensitive, flexible and able to work independently and function under pressure in a difficult environment.
