Policy Advisor/Deputy Director (Policy)
United Nations Millennium Campaign

Background:

The Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) were derived from the Millennium Declaration adopted by the Heads of State at the United Nations Millennium Summit, held in September 2000, representing 189 countries. The Campaign seeks to work with citizens groups, youth, media, Parliamentarians and local authorities to build political will for the realization of these Goals, within the framework provided by the Declaration.

Responsibilities:

Working closely with the Deputy Directors for Africa and Asia and the Deputy Director, Communications, we are looking for a Policy Advisor who will act as the Deputy Director (Policy), with the following primary responsibilities:

1. Support MDG campaigning efforts in developing countries by providing policy advice on governance and accountability-related issues;
2. Assist in the formulation of campaign messaging on key issues related to governance and accountability, particularly for the campaigns in developing countries;
3. Develop/adapt campaign tools and instruments for MDG campaigns in developing countries;
4. Deepen MDG campaign partnerships with Parliamentarians in developing countries
5. Deepen MDG campaign partnerships with local authorities in developing countries
6. Represent the Millennium Campaign at key meetings, particularly in New York, including at the UN;
7. Network and build strong links with key partners within and outside the UN working on governance, accountability, anti-corruption and democratisation campaigning;
8. Provide content from MDG campaigning in developing countries to the Millennium Campaign's external audience through the web and other publications;
9. Support knowledge management and learning on MDG campaigning and advocacy
10. Any other responsibilities, as assigned, in support of the policy initiatives of the UN Millennium Campaign
Person Specifications:

1. At least 10 years experience in the policy arena on governance, accountability or related areas, particularly in Sub Saharan Africa and/or South Asia;
2. Familiarity with the political economy of MDGs, PRSs and National budgets is essential;
3. Strong links with major actors in the realm of governance and accountability is expected;
4. At least a Masters degree in a related discipline from a reputed school is a pre-requisite;
5. Excellent English writing and speaking ability is required;
6. Track record of working with teams and strong interpersonal skills is essential;
7. Exposure to working in an international setting is desirable;
8. Prior experience in framing policy messaging for advocacy campaigns will be a distinct advantage and
9. Prior experience of working with or dealing closely with the UN is preferred.
