Project description:

Since 2003 MDM has been continuously supporting the Ministry of Health in the provision of qualitative health services in urban and rural areas of the Bong County. Different components are presently developed in a tight collaboration with the Bong County Health Team.
MDM is directly supporting 9 health clinics and 1 health center through the provision of the full package of primary health services, by providing drugs, physical rehabilitation and maintenance of health facilities, incentive and continuous theoretical and on-job training of facilities staff, epidemical surveillance, in-patient facility at the health center level and transfer of patients to referral structures for emergency care.

MDM started a new project component in 2008 focusing on the reduction of maternal & newborn mortality in the Bong County. This project intends to:
- ensure access to emergency obstetrical and newborn care services according to international and national guidelines in the supported health facilities of the Bong county
- introduce enlarged PMTCT (Prevention of Mother to Child Transmission of HIV) services at the primary health level
- ensure the availability of medical and paramedical human resources and strengthen their skills for the mother and newborn care in the Bong County.

This 5-year project is financially supported by the Mc Call Mac Bain Foundation.
Objectives of the survey:

The MoH conducted a Demographic and Health Survey in 2007. Still specific baseline data on mother and newborn health status are not available for the Bong County.
As a consequence, in collaboration with the national and regional authorities, MDM intends to provide with comprehensive baseline measures of maternal and neonatal health care within the first year of its project (2008) and by the end of it (2012).

The main objectives of the baseline survey are as follows:

* Estimate maternal and newborns' mortality rates
* Document the causes of maternal and newborns' deaths
* Document the proportion of women who received appropriate health services in conjunction with recent pregnancies, including antenatal care and skilled attendance at delivery
* Document the proportion of newborns who received appropriate health services at birth, including routine and emergency care
* Document the proportion of women/children pairs who received appropriate PMTCT services, including women's counseling and testing, ARV prophylaxis for the mother and the newborn, education on breast feeding and appropriate child follow-up
* Document the scope and magnitude of violence, its consequences on physical and mental health and its consequences on medical and non medical aspects.
