The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Pittsburgh invites applications for a non-tenure-stream position at the Associate/Full Professor level in Mining Engineering effective August 1, 2008. Applicants must have an earned Ph.D. degree in Civil or Mining Engineering or an allied field with research and teaching interest in one or more of the following areas: mine ventilation, rock mechanics, mining health and safety, mining systems, and mining reclamation and subsidence. Candidates interested in collaborative and interdisciplinary research are especially encouraged to apply.

The Swanson School of Engineering has a history of research and instruction in the field of Mining Engineering. Recently, a Mining Engineering Option has been offered within the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering to help address the strong regional and national demand for engineers with mining expertise. The applicant will be expected to direct their efforts at mining engineering research to address many of the health and safety, environmental and productivity issues facing our nation’s mineral industry. In addition to research, the candidate will serve as a Director and teach courses in support of the Mining Engineering Program and will be responsible for developing a vibrant graduate level program in Mining Engineering. Student enrollment within the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering is currently at more than 280 undergraduate students and approximately 80 graduate students.
